frequently asked questions > back to functional training

"Who can do it?"

Anyone can do, and indeed everyone should be doing it! Functional training is about improving daily activities, which of course everyone performs albeit differently.

With each exercise there are levels of progression, just as there are with conventional exercises. With each progression the complexity increases and so too does the challenge to co-ordination and balance.

The great thing about functional training is that no matter what level you are at there will be a version of the exercise you are able to perform. Once you have mastered the level you are on you move onto the next level and so on.

There are no real limits as to how complex the exercises can get, but it is essential that you master each level before moving onto the next. This allows the body to develop the necessary skills and avoids injury!

"So how can I incorporate it into my gym routine?"

The first thing you need to do is consider what you are training for in the gym. Many gym members don't really know why they are there, or if they have an idea of why they are there, don't really know if the exercises they select are really achieving their objectives.

If your routing consists mainly of fixed resistance machines, it is probably time you considered an overhaul. There is little or no functional carry over with resistance machines, and whilst they do have their uses (eg body building, injury rehab) there are more effective alternatives out available.

Consider the seated chest press machine (top) compared to the single arm standing cable press (bottom) - which one do you think is more closely matched to real life situations?!

"I'm not a member of a gym, how can I do Functional Training at home?"

The great thing about functional training is that you don't need loads of machines or fancy equipment to have an effective workout. Being a member of a gym certainly has its advantages, but is by no means a requirement to get outstanding results. Coming soon to this section will be a selection of the best exercises you can perform with little or no equipment in the comfort of your own home.

"How do I get started?"

Use the exercise descriptions from the exercise library to incorporate functional training into your routine. As discussed earlier, it is essential that you master the basic level exercises before moving onto the more advanced versions. A personal trainer to teach you the basics and get you started is a good investment as it will ensure you don't fall into bad habits. Remember, only perfect practice makes perfect!
